What is medication management?
Medication management is patient-focused care that encourages adherence to medication routine through medicine packaging according to the time doses need to be administered. Organising doses in small, individual packs such as sachets or blister packs helps carers and patients remember to administer medications. Dose Administration Aids assist in visually tracking medication uptake as the patient can clearly see when doses must be taken or if they have been missed. Medication management also involves any other support that may be needed to assist the patient’s optimal uptake of medication such as reminder notifications.
Benefits of medication management
- Better health outcomes for patients especially seniors
- Reduced chances of missed doses and/or incorrect doses
- Decreased risk of health complications arising from administering doses at the wrong time
- Making managing health of a loved one stress-free
- Improved adherence with simplified packaging

Top tips for managing medication while travelling
Managing medication while travelling requires more attention and planning than just making sure you have packed enough for the trip. One of the most important factors to consider are time zones you will be travelling through and plan your doses accordingly. Weather conditions can affect the composition of medications and it is worth finding out beforehand if you need to make special arrangements for storage.
Before travelling, consult with your doctor any diets that may have an unfavourable impact on your regular medications. While travelling to new places, you may not always have control over what is available to eat. If you are required to take medication with meals, speak to your doctor about snack options to pack for the trip.
Managing medication at home
Here are some tips to simplify medication management at home
Understand suitability to diet
Some medications need to be taken with certain foods or must be avoided with particular food groups. It is best practice to understand how your diet can affect the effectiveness of your medications.
Remember to speak to your doctor about what must be done in the event of you or your loved one missing a dose. Some medicines have serious implications of missed or incorrect doses.
Speak to your local TerryWhite Chemmart pharmacist about packing medicines in individual doses. This will eliminate difficulty in remembering medicine schedules for yourself and a loved one.
Establish a schedule
Set up a regular schedule for administering doses and stick to it. It is ideal to work it in the patient’s daily routine e.g. after the morning walk. It may be helpful to set an alarm to get started, until the routine has been formed.
Your pharmacist at your local TerryWhite Chemmart can recommend the most suitable method to pack your medicines, after discussing your or your loved ones’ medication requirements.
Our special dosing device, Dose Administration Aid, organises tablets, capsules and caplets into individual doses according to the time they should be taken. A few different types of Dose Administration Aids we offer are blister packs, bubble packs, compartmentalised boxes, sachet rolls or compliance packs dispensed by automated machines.
Often our pharmacists will request more information on routine habits and lifestyle of the patient. The pharmacist will try to identify ways to fit daily dose administration into the patient’s routine such that it requires minimal extra effort. Making it a part of routine living would allow for better compliance and minimise chances of forgetting.
Medications are securely packed and personally labelled to ensure you take the right dose at the right time, avoiding the risk of missed doses or overdoses. Packed medication is perfect to take away on travels.
Your prescriptions are safe at your local TerryWhite Chemmart pharmacy and your medicines will be packed and ready to collect from the pharmacy at a date and time suitable to you. You can also organise a weekly or monthly schedule for pick-up and avoid the prescription queues. Corticosteroid nasal sprays
Corticosteroid nasal sprays reduce swelling in the lining of the nose and are known to be one of the most effective treatments for hay fever. They help provide relief from itching, sneezing, runny and blocked noses, and irritation in eyes. It is important to follow your pharmacist’s advice on taking medications over a period of time.
Antihistamine tablets, syrups or eye drops
Antihistamines treat the symptoms of hay fever by blocking the action of the histamine, which is released by the body in reaction to an allergen. Relief from irritated eyes, overall itchiness and sneezing can be sought with antihistamine tablets. Eyes may appear red and swollen due to itchiness and watering. Eye drops containing antihistamine are known to provide immediate relief.
You may find some natural products such as saltwater nasal sprays provide better relief for dry nasal passages or thick nasal mucous. The saline solution clears congestion in the nasal passage and washes out allergens such as dust, pollen and irritants.
This is an allergen-specific treatment option that is usually administered over a few years by a trained medical specialist, such as a clinical immunologist. The therapy follows a desensitisation mode of treatment wherein the patient is injected with small doses of allergen extracts; to desensitise the body to allergens gradually over time.
